Week Five Post: Sleep Disorders

Did you know that snoring is considered a sleep disorder? People may wake up with difficulty and they feel tired in the morning and throughout the whole day. Those people can also end up falling asleep while at work or while they drive and take frequent naps. Other sleep disorders are sleep apnea, insomnia, and narcolepsy. Sleep apea is when people stop breathing for up to ten seconds throughout their sleep. Insomnia is when people have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep along with functional impairment during the day. Narcolepsy is a condition where people fall asleep at random times during the day, such as in school or at work.

I am really glad that I do not have such sleeping disorders listed above. I really love sleeping and I hate the way I feel and look without a good night's sleep. I wouldn't want to fall asleep at random parts in the day because that would show a sign of disrespect in class or work.

Week Four Post: Tips For Getting A Good Night's Sleep

A lot of people, including myself, have a hard time either falling asleep or even getting a good night's sleep. Setting a specific time to go to bed and a specific time to wake up can help solve these problems because a person's body is set on a specific schedule. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, laying in bed awake, television, too much liquid, too much food, worry, anxiety, light, noise, napping, and using your bed for anything other than sleeping should be avoided so that people can be able to fall asleep fast and stay asleep. Exercising regularly, sleeping mainly at night, choosing a comfortable mattress and pillow, having enough room, eating foods that have tryptophan (in protein) and carbohydrates, relaxing before sleep, and controlling the room temperature can also help you go to sleep and remain asleep.

I have followed these tips without even realizing it or even reading them before. For example, I have noticed that if I drink a lot of soda, which has a lot of caffeine in it, before bed, it always takes me a while to fall asleep. In addition, I learned to never take naps. My friends can take naps after school and simply just go to bed normally after that but, I, on the other hand, cannot. All in all, these tips do help a lot.

Week Three Post: Beauty Sleep

Believe it or not, beauty sleep does exist. No a person can't get more attractive everytime they go to bed and then wake up in the morning, but sleep definitely makes a difference when it's compared to a person who has not slept for 48 hours to a person who had their full 9 hours of sleep.

How can lying down and falling asleep contribute to the beauty in the concept of beauty sleep? During the night, sleep causes people to perspire and this allows the skin to smooth out wrinkles. In addition, the circulatory system boosts blood flow to the skin and that is why people have a certain radiance when they have a good night’s sleep opposed to a bad one. Another reason why a person maintains their beauty by sleeping is because no sleep can lead to “puffy, bloodshot eyes, dark under-eye circles and a pale washed-out complexion.” Skin can also look almost almost tinted blue without sleep.

I have noticed that sleep has made a difference in a person’s appearance. During the summer, there was a Relay for Life event that was held at East Leyden’s Dodge Field. This event kept everyone on my team up the whole night, so when I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I noticed that my face was pale and unsightly from all the hours I have spent wide awake. After going home at six in the morning and after six hours of sleep, I looked better and my face had a glow.

Week Two Post: Theories Why We Have Dreams

Because we spend so much time in the dreaming stage, it’s baffling that scientists don’t know the reason why people dream, but people have certainly come up with theories.

According to this one website, there are a couple of theories. The first is called Freud’s Theory which basically states that dreams represent one’s ongoing wish. For example, I love dogs and I want to get one, which is my ongoing wish. As a result, I have been dreaming dreams about me receiving a dog or playing with one. Another theory is Jung’s Theory, which basically says that dreams allow us to reflect on our waking selves and solve our problems or think through issues. I believe this theory is true as well because when I type in major symbols that showed up in my dreams at this website, it usually interprets the dream and connects it to my life. These connections end up shedding light on problems and make me realize and do something about them. Another proposal suggests that dreams are the result of our brain trying to interpret external stimuli during sleep. For example, the sound of the radio may be incorporated into the content of a dream. This example happens quite often to me.

I believe all these theories can be intertwined because I have dreamed through them all.

Week One Post: Why We Need Sleep

With the invention of the light bulb people can now stay awake past their recommended bedtimes and do things such as watch movies, text, or do a late night project. This results in sleep deprived citizens.

The effects of sleep deprivation are serious, an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity and diabetes. But why do we need sleep? Sleep is a way of recharging the brain, sleep gives the brain an opportunity to process newly learned information and organize and archive memories. During sleep, the body has a chance to replace chemicals and repair muscles, other tissues and aging or dead cells. In children and young adults, growth hormones are released during deep sleep. Not only do we use sleep to recharge our body and brain but "beauty sleep" isn't a myth either sleep because it does lessen the severity of wrinkles in the face and neck, What happens if you don't get your beauty sleep? Poor sleep quality helps to negate the bad effects of cortisol, a hormone released when stressed, which can reduce immune responses.

Lack of sleep affects our thinking, our sense of humor, and personalities.
I always make sure to manage my homework time to get the most sleep I can during the school week. If I don't, then my mood is affected and my mind isn't totally focused on school. I also don't feel too confident because I didn't get my "beauty sleep."
