Because we spend so much time in the dreaming stage, it’s baffling that scientists don’t know the reason why people dream, but people have certainly come up with theories.
According to this one website, there are a couple of theories. The first is called Freud’s Theory which basically states that dreams represent one’s ongoing wish. For example, I love dogs and I want to get one, which is my ongoing wish. As a result, I have been dreaming dreams about me receiving a dog or playing with one. Another theory is Jung’s Theory, which basically says that dreams allow us to reflect on our waking selves and solve our problems or think through issues. I believe this theory is true as well because when I type in major symbols that showed up in my dreams at this website, it usually interprets the dream and connects it to my life. These connections end up shedding light on problems and make me realize and do something about them. Another proposal suggests that dreams are the result of our brain trying to interpret external stimuli during sleep. For example, the sound of the radio may be incorporated into the content of a dream. This example happens quite often to me.
I believe all these theories can be intertwined because I have dreamed through them all.
